Home Security-Take the First Step
For everyone I know and 99.9% of all Americans their home is their most valuable asset. Yet fewer than 20% of Americans do anything to protect their home aside from insurance.
When we think of ways to protect your home, perhaps the first thing that comes to mind is insurance. Maybe that falls in the category of a no brainer-aside from the fact that mortgage companies require it.
A huge business has sprung up with all sorts of home security companies-everything from armed guards to guard dogs to monthly monitoring fees and all manner of equipment from security cameras to IR sensors, door and window alarms, electrified fences, security perimeters, etc.
All because the bad guys want what is in your house!
According to police officials 90% of all burglaries can be prevented and almost 33% of burglaries are by unlawful entry thru UNLOCKED doors and windows.
So the first step is lock all doors and windows even when you are home. Recently a home invasion occurred in Colorado Springs with the bad guys coming in thru an open window. One idea that slides under the radar sometimes is leaving the garage door open about two feet to let the hot air out. It also can let the bad guys in. Doesn’t that make sense to you?
The second step would be to take some preventative measures to protect your home. Get some simple home security devices. Items such as window and door alarms are easy to install, easy to use and very inexpensive.
Make sure your front door has a peephole and use it. Security chains are pretty much a waste of money. Invest in a heavy duty deadbolt and fortify the doorframe.
The third step might be to take a critical look at your home from afar. In other words how does a stranger (burglar) see your home? Is it an attractive target? As I like to ask “is the unwelcome mat out?”
Are you making it as difficult as possible to gain access to your house by removing trees and shrubs that make great hiding places? Use your head to save your house. Common sense prevails here.
Lastly, get some Self Defense Products like pepper sprays and stun guns to have around the house just in case of a home invasion. Who knows it may save your life.
Taking these steps starts with the first one and the most obvious to me. How about you? Lock your doors and windows today! Then follow up with the rest of these steps to protect yourself, your family and your home.
